"It's crazy how quick we judge people," Jurgen Klopp said in a television interview broadcast a couple of hours before Darwin Nunez planted his forehead on Joachim Andersen to bring his first Liverpool start to a premature end.
Klopp’s point was impossible to argue with, irrespective of what has followed for Liverpool’s £85m signing. The Uruguayan striker has not transitioned seamlessly to life on Merseyside after moving from Benfica but some observers were already writing him off in pre-season.
"Imagine if somebody did that to us and said, 'First day of work, it didn't work out. Go home, we never want to see you again. And you don't get a second chance by the way,” Klopp continued. “We would have all been long gone. No chance.”
