Dartmouth football coach Buddy Teevens suffered spinal cord damage and had his leg amputated as the result of injuries sustained in a March biking accident, his wife, Kristen, said in a release Tuesday.
Buddy was involved in a crash in St. Augustine, Fla., on March 16, when he was struck by a pickup truck while biking home from a restaurant with his wife, according to a report obtained by Valley News. He was hospitalized as a result of his injuries. Kristen noted he is “experiencing many positive improvements” but is also facing “challenging” injuries.
“We would like to thank everyone for the incredible outpouring of love and support for Buddy. It has been nothing short of amazing and we are so grateful,” she said in a release. “As Buddy navigates through the healing of his injuries, he is experiencing many positive improvements.
“Unfortunately, as a result of the accident, Buddy’s right leg was amputated due to the severity of the injury. He is alert and communicating with us and ready for transfer to a premier rehab facility to continue healing. Spinal cord injuries are challenging, and if anybody is up for the challenge, it is Buddy. We appreciate your continued respect of our privacy as we navigate this ongoing recovery process as a family.”
According to the report obtained by Valley News, “no illuminated lights were observed on the bicycle” and that Teevens “was not in a crosswalk or designated crossing area” at the time of the accident. He was also not wearing a helmet.
Buddy, 66, is the winningest coach in the history of Big Green football. He first coached Dartmouth from 1987 to ’91, but he left the program and spent time at other college programs. He eventually returned to the Big Green in 2005 and has been there ever since. Buddy has compiled a 117-101-2 record in his 23 seasons with the program.
