Popular presenter Dan Walker kick-started his Channel 5 career in dramatic fashion after it was announced earlier in the day that a vote of no confidence in Boris Johnson would take place. After becoming synonymous with the famous red sofa in the early hours of the morning on BBC Breakfast, Walker was broadcasting from outside Number 10 during this new teatime slot.
Viewers were delighted to see the 45-year old return after a two-week absence from the news cycle, and were equally impressed by how he handled the ever-changing situation of the day’s news. Some joked how the bunting which was still visible in the background were actually decorated for Walker rather than the Queen’s Jubilee.
Those tuning in took to Twitter to note how he could have had far easier ways to begin his new venture on Channel 5. @HHallis joked: “#5News with @mrdanwalker great start to it nice and gentle Monday, enjoy and best of luck.”

@VaughanieCOYI also commented “You certainly won’t forget this first day! Wishing you all the very best, a nice confident start from you if I may say so” while @Onelessnut added “Nothing like easing into your new job... and this is nothing like easing in! #sorrynotsorry.” Many people were pleased to see the former Strictly Come Dancing star back in his element, as @dapharries said “Good start Dan, interesting story and the rain kept off” and @1011cheryl stated “Excellent! Good luck, what a day to start!”
The presenter left the BBC after six years on Tuesday 17 May. His departure was announced back in April and Walker said he was "really excited" to take on his new role at Channel 5 News, duly replacing Sian Williams who recently stepped down from anchoring the show.
His debut show saw him expertly speak to guests from remote locations, as well as talking to reporters on site while also keeping the viewers informed and entertained by talking to the camera.
