Dalbeattie Primary recognised for environmental work with eighth Eco Schools green flag

Dalbeattie Primary has been awarded its eighth Eco Schools green flag.

The success has owed greatly to some of the achievements within the school’s green action plan, particularly in relation to its strong links with community groups.

That includes the major School Grounds for Outdoor Wellbeing project, which has involved a fundraising campaign to attract donations towards plans to improve the playground area to have shade and shelter in all weathers and to enhance wildlife habitats. The project has just reached the implementation stage of installing items ahead of a formal opening once the work is complete.

The school has also been supported by The People’s Project and Dalbeattie Rotary Club, who have agreed to co-fund an outdoor classroom, and also by The Ruth and Bert Dunn Trust and The William Heughan Associated Special Trust, who are also donating similar levels of funds.

The school also features in Tesco’s current in-store token vote.

Also mentioned in feedback from the Eco Schools team was the success of growing things, the re-launching of citizenship booklets and engagement with Galloway Fisheries Trust over the River of Hope project which resulted in one class’ salmon art work being displayed on a flag at the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee pageant.

Eco Schools was also impressed with the schools’ participation in the Rotary young writers’ competition about the environment and the science club’s work to address climate change.

It is hoped to have a big eighth flag celebration soon.
