Dakota Johnson's bedroom modernizes a century-old wall feature with textured linens, wicker furniture, and colorful accessories

Dakota Johnson.

Wood walls may conjure images of 70s homes for some, but this sturdy material actually has a rich history yet it can still be modernized when styled correctly, as we learned from seeing Dakota Johnson's bedroom.

The Fifty Shades of Grey and Madame Web star's bedroom, which is designed by celebrity-favored Pierce & Ward, is a warm wood oasis featuring complete wall paneling, a traditional navy blue and red rug, an ochre bed frame, and a customized, embroidered duvet.

The tactful blend of colors and materials makes the wood paneling look anything but dated, especially when combined with accented wood and wicker pieces, such as a chair and credenza.

According to experts, wood paneling is surprisingly associated with glamour and opulence despite its current commonality among homes of all sizes.

'Wood-paneled walls have a long and storied history, dating back centuries to when they were first used in grand estates and manor houses to insulate and add warmth to cold stone walls,' says designer Nina Lichtenstein. 'During the Renaissance, richly carved wood paneling was a mark of luxury and craftsmanship, and by the mid-20th century, it became a staple in mid-century modern and rustic interior design.'

Lichtenstein says that wood's appeal lies in both its practicality as a sturdy home material and its ability to fit into an array of design styles.

'Though once synonymous with more traditional styles, wood walls have evolved, gaining renewed popularity in contemporary homes for their organic texture and timeless appeal,' she explains. 'Today, they add warmth, depth, and a connection to nature, bridging classic design with modern sensibilities.'

The textural elements of Johnson's bedroom are what keep the space modern. Her crisp, white bedding and large artwork hanging above the wood credenza give the room a more contemporary feel, while still feeling slightly traditional.

Lichtenstein recommends opting for some neutral accessories when styling around wood-paneled walls.

'To style around wood-paneled walls in a modern way, it’s essential to balance their natural warmth with sleek, clean elements,' she states. 'Pairing wood with neutral or muted tones, such as white or light gray furniture, can create contrast and a fresh, airy feel.'

However, color and pattern can and should come into the equation, as we can see in Johnson's bedroom with her rug and duvet.

Lichtenstein continues, 'Incorporating minimalist decor, such as simple metal or glass lighting fixtures, and adding pops of color through accessories like abstract art or geometric-patterned textiles can prevent the space from feeling too traditional or heavy. Layering modern furnishings with organic textures, such as jute rugs, leather accents, and greenery, can create a striking juxtaposition that feels both cozy and up-to-date.'
