Dakota Johnson has a new hair color for fall, but the part of her look that reliably resets the internet every time she changes anything is still exactly where it's always been. On September 1, the actress was photographed arriving at Warner Bros. Studios in Los Angeles with a noticeably darker, glossier brunette shade, a deliberate step away from the dirty-blonde highlights she'd tried out earlier this year. Her longtime colorist, Tracey Cunningham, named the new hue "Glossed Espresso," achieved with multiple tones of Schwarzkopf Professional's Igora Vibrance applied while Johnson's hair was wet, moving from a lighter formula at the root to a richer one through the lengths for a seamless, shadow-root effect rather than a flat, single-tone brown.
What didn't change is the part of Johnson's hair that has functioned as her beauty signature for the better part of a decade: her curtain bangs. The style, parted just off-center and swept to frame both sides of the face, has stayed the throughline across every color Johnson has tried, from her natural chocolate brown to the platinum-blonde bob she wore for a 2023 film role to this spring's Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy-inspired "Bessette Blonde."
