Dad whose wife and daughters died in flat fire condemns 'cruel crime against my family'

A heartbroken dad whose 'beautiful' wife and two young children were killed in an arson attack on their home has condemned the person behind the "cruel crime " committed against his family.

Fatoumatta Hydara, a 28-year-old former voluntary worker, died two days after the devastating blaze which also claimed the lives of one-year-old Naeemah Drammeh and Fatimah Drammeh, aged three.

Police have launched a triple murder probe following the fatal fire, which tore through a flat in Fairisle Close, Clifton, Nottingham at 3.17am on Sunday.

On Wednesday, Aboubacarr Drammeh, 40, released a moving tribute to his wife and two kids which also hit out at the person, or people, behind the horror crime.

The statement, released by Aboubacarr after he flew back to the UK from America, said it was with "great sadness" that the family had lost Fatoumatta and their two daughters in such a tragic way.

"Fatoumatta had lived a short but a very beautiful and fulfilling life," he said.

"A former voluntary worker, Fatoumatta was a very happy, bubbly woman who wouldn't have the heart to hurt a fly.

"It is therefore inconceivable to think who might have committed this cruel crime against my family."

Aboubacarr went on to thank the Ahmadi Muslim community in Nottinghamshire, as well as the Gambian community, his local neighbours and all of those who had provided "continuous support" throughout a difficult time.

"I and my in-laws are left without any daughters, grandchildren and nieces. I will deeply miss my family," he said.

The two tragic youngsters were rushed to Nottingham's Queen's Medical Centre following the blaze, but nothing could be done to save them.

Their mother was placed on a life support machine but died on Tuesday morning.

A joint fire and police investigation found the blaze was started deliberately and a triple murder inquiry is ongoing.

A 31-year-old man, from Clifton, who was arrested on suspicion of murder is still being quizzed by detectives.

Notts Police has confirmed the force is keeping an 'open mind' over the circumstances surrounding the deaths of the family.

The force said it didn't currently believe the attack was racially-motivated.

Speaking at the scene of the fire, inspector Karl Thomas, of Notts Police, said: "We are treating this as an isolated incident, but we are carrying out high visibility parols.

"We will be engaging with the community with our partners to offer that reassurance to the community."

He revealed 40 detectives were working on the triple murder inquiry, including officers from neighbouring Leics and Derbys forces, adding: "This is a truly horrific incident that has rocked the community.

"All our attention is on gathering the evidence and doing everything we can to ensure this family gets justice."

Detective Chief Inspector Mark Sinski, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: "I'd like to thank everyone who has come forward with information so far to aid our ongoing investigation.

"This is very much an active investigation though, so I'd ask anyone who has any footage from the surrounding area they haven't sent to us yet or has any information that could assist our inquiries, to please get in touch.

"No words can describe the pain the family of the victims are all feeling right now and we are doing everything possible to get them the justice they deserve."

Detective Inspector Sinski said every piece of evidence gathered by police would get them closer to achieving that goal.

He asked that anyone who knew anything or was in or around Fairisle Close between 12am and 4.30am on Sunday morning "please get in touch".

Neighbours described fleeing the blaze as the road filled with black smoke 'like a fog' before later speaking of their shock the family had perished.

One resident, who did not wish to be named, said: "You can't imagine what that poor dad is going through - to lose you wife and children like that in one go.

"He was here yesterday but in a state of shock. He's utterly devastated, of course you would be. You can't even put yourself in that position. It is just heartbreaking.

"The place has been swarming with police for two days, we've never known anything like this. It's just too sad, tragic doesn't even begin to cover it.

"I didn't really know them but they seemed a lovely, happy little family. The three-year-old was just the sweetest thing, always playing and laughing.

"The baby was just a baby, she hadn't even started her life yet. It's just too cruel to comprehend."
