Dad of five 'nearly died three times' after scraping his knuckles fixing car

A dad-of-five was forced to have his arm amputated after he grazed his knuckles while tinkering with his car and developed deadly sepsis.

Stephen Rae, from North Lanarkshire in Scotland, was working on his motor when he injured his right hand in May 2017 but dismissed it as a minor cut which soon scabbed over. The following month, the 40-year-old woke to discover his right forearm was extremely swollen before being admitted to hospital on an IV drip to treat the blood poisoning.

The die-hard Celtic fan was released from Hairmyres Hospital after 10 days but ended up being readmitted just weeks later after the infection returned in his limb. In December that year, the dad from Cumbernauld thought he was suffering from a bad flu when his right elbow began to swell up.
