Dad left furious after British Gas mistakenly send bailiffs to his house four times

Bungling British Gas sent bailiffs to a dad’s flat four times after he moved in – for an £8,000 bill belonging to a home half a mile away.

The firm, whose owners Centrica reported £3.3 billion profits, bombarded Rowan Purdy, 45, with threats.

But despite the builder having proof the bill was not his, British Gas kept sending debt agents with engineers to force-fit a pre-payment metre he already had.

The energy company had even sent him a letter confirming they’d been billing him incorrectly – but the bailiffs kept coming.

Rowan, of South Hams, Devon, said the strain and anxiety let to him being off sick from work last month.

He said: “British Gas should be ashamed of themselves. They have caused me huge amounts of stress. I’m constantly worried bailiffs will knock on the door again.”

British Gas said: “We are sorry we haven’t been able to resolve Mr Purdey’s complaint sooner.

"Debt letters have been stopped while the complaint is investigated by the Ombudsman.”
