Dad goes suddenly blind while driving boys back from football and left needing emergency operation

A dad was rushed for an emergency brain operation after having a “massive stroke” at the wheel in Dukinfield. Simon Hughes was driving his 12-year-old son Howard and a friend home from football practice when he became unwell at around 5pm on May 29.

The 57-year-old began suffering a stroke while driving along King Street – suddenly losing his ability to see. As the car veered out of control and Simon started driving on the wrong side of the road, Howard saw his father's face drooping and began to scream.

The car then smashed into some bollards, forcing it to a stop. Howard’s friend Harry, who was also in the car, jumped out and put the handbrake on before attempting to flag down passing drivers.

One man stopped and helped by removing Simon’s foot from the accelerator and switching off the engine. Harry phoned an ambulance while another driver took the young boys to the side of the road.

Simon was taken to Stepping Hill Hospital then rushed to Salford Royal where he underwent surgery to remove a large clot on his brain. He is now back home in Dukinfield where he will continue his recovery.

His wife Debbie, 47, says he is struggling with his speech and is still suffering from confusion. Doctors are unsure whether there will be any lasting damage.

Speaking to the Manchester Evening News, she said: “The doctor said everybody recovers differently. (There are) little improvements every day so hopefully he will recover over time.

“He doesn’t remember much, just that he couldn’t see. He remembers Howard screaming at him and pulling at his arm on the steering wheel.

"Howard phoned me hysterical and put me on the phone to the lady, she told me where they were and promised to stay with them until I got there. Harry’s dad arrived first and stayed with my husband reassuring him until the ambulance arrived.“

“The past days have been horrific and exhausting, however I am unable to put into words how proud I am of my son Howard and his friend Harry. Without their quick thinking, Simon would not still be here. There is a long road ahead but I know Simon can get there.

“Howard is very upset obviously but is being amazing with his dad and helping anyway he can. The two boys gave me the chance to have my husband back, they will always be my heroes.“
