A dad helping his 12-year-old daughter collect food parcels died in a freak accident after falling out the car.
Aaron LaMore, 45, from Illinois, was in his car's open hatchback on November 6 when he suddenly fell backwards from the vehicle and banged his head on the pavement.
The car was only going around 5mph when the dad tragically lost his footing and fell onto the pavement.
Emergency services were called and Aaron managed to get up and walk into the ambulance where he was initially treated.
According to his brother-in-law, Ryan Talaga, the father and daughter failed to make it to the first house before the tragic accident.
He said the dad was helping his daughter with a project for the girl scouts, he revealed to Patch : “They didn’t even get to the first house when he lost his footing.”
The former Army veteran was rushed to Silver Cross Hospital in Joliet, Illinois, but suffered multiple fractures and swelling around his skull and was bleeding from the brain.
He also went into cardiac arrest for a few minutes before he was airlifted to the University of Chicago Hospital for treatment.
Ryan said his brother-in-law's injuries were so bad they were irreversible, he added: "His injuries were grave at that time, irreversible damage."
The dad was placed on life support due to his "grave injuries" and died on Veteran's Day, Friday 11 November.
He tragically leaves behind his wife of 16 years Erin and their daughter, Mia.
There has been a GoFundMe page set-up to help cover medical bills, Mia's schooling and expenses, which was Ryan's idea.
He said: "We tried to turn a terrible situation into a situation that gives us a little sense of peace, working with Gift of Hope.
"This is the worst thing that could happen to my sister and my niece, but knowing that he’s able to save lives, gives them some peace."
As of Saturday there has been more than $39,476 (£32,000) raised.
Family and friends paid tribute to Aaron as one person who worked with him said: "I had the privilege of working with Aaron. He was one of the good ones and he will be missed."
Whilst Kelsey Musich, who also worked with him, said: "I work at the Tollway with Aaron and he will surely be missed. Im so sorry for your loss."
