CYG: Ganguly claims 400m IM silver, bronze for Anupriya

Teenager Shoan Ganguly became only the third Indian swimmer to win a medal at the Commonwealth Youth Games (CYG) currently under way in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago.

The 18-year-old Bengaluru-based swimmer clocked 4:25.47 to claim silver in the 400m individual medley event on Monday. Others to have won medals at the CYG are Virdhawal Khade and Suri yo Mondol. Ganguly, who trains at the Basavanagudi Aquatic Centre, came through in a tight race in which five swimmers were separated by a fraction of a second. England's Reece Grady won the gold in 4:25.16, while Scotland's Evan Davidson (4:25.68) was third.

Speaking to TOI, Ganguly, who trains under John Christopher, said, "Thrilled to have won a medal for the country. It was a fantastic race and I gave it my all. At the Nationals, my timing wasn't great because I made a lot of mistakes. In the weeks leading up to this CYG, I worked on them."Ganguly will feature in the 200m individual medley event on Wednesday.

Anupriya dazzles

In the girl's shot put, 17-yearold Anupriya Valliyot Sasi won bronze with a heave of 15.62m in her third attempt. South Africa's Alicia Eli Khunou (17.97) and Xylavene Beale (16.3 1) of Australia won the gold and silver respectively.
