The Cyclospora outbreak traced to iceberg lettuce has grown to 1,947 confirmed cases across nine states, with four states added since mid-July, and federal officials have now confirmed something that reframes the whole story: the recalled lettuce explains only a fraction of the parasite infections being reported this summer.
Nationally, CDC has confirmed 6,707 laboratory-confirmed domestically acquired cyclosporiasis cases since May 1 and says it is aware of more than 11,500 additional cases that are not yet laboratory confirmed or that require further investigation. Hospitalizations across all reported cases exceed 400.
