Cyclist dad-of-two rushed to hospital after horror 'hit and run' caught on CCTV

CCTV footage shows the horror moment a cyclist dad-of-two was sent flying into the air during a suspected hit and run. Darren Murphy suffered eight shattered ribs following the rush-hour smash at 8.40am on September 29 in Wythenshawe.

The technician had been travelling to The Christie Hospital when, as he crossed Hall Lane, he was struck by a car and knocked from his bike. Darren was rushed to A&E following the crash, with his loved ones fearing he had been killed in the collision.

His family have since released shocking footage of the incident, which shows the car hitting the dad before speeding off. They are appealing to anyone with information to get in touch with police, Manchester Evening News reports.

Daughter Alina Murphy, 20, told the Manchester Evening News: "It was awful, we didn't find out until about two hours after it happened. We looked for him on the Find My Friends app and it said he was stuck where he had the accident.

"We had to call his work, I knew straight away what would have happened. My dad isn't the type to not show up to work. We called Wythenshawe and found out he was in A&E.

"I went into a full panic. No one was able to tell me anything."

The family arrived at the hospital to find Darren with a head brace, 'struggling to get his words out' and 'very lethargic' as he recovered from the smash. "But it was good to see that he was still alive," explained Alina.

"He could still talk and didn't have brain damage. If he gets better, he's now going to have to see that road every day, it's so near our house.

"You can't even go to the shops without being on it. He's never going to be able to forget this."

The family say they have lost sleep over the terrifying crash and are pleading with members of the public to come forward with information.

The family claims Darren was hit by a white Toyota Corolla, claiming the driver 'ran a red light' before fleeing the scene.

"As if that isn’t horrific enough, [the driver] drove away knowing he was left in the middle of the road.

"Thank you to the people that stopped and stayed with him waiting for the ambulance, I don’t think he would still be here without you," said Alina.

Greater Manchester Police have been contacted for comment.
