Cycle lane sealed off as police investigate "serious sexual assault"

A cycle lane in Renfrewshire has been sealed off following a serious sexual assault.

Police officers descended on the Route 75 cycle path at Brookfield yesterday following reports a person had been attacked.

The incident took place on Tuesday but officers would not confirm if it was a targeted attack.

The route between Linwood and Bridge of Weir was blocked off to the public all day as officers carried out their investigation, with the path cordoned off between Sandholes Road and the Brookfield Village Park entrance.

Officers were stationed at the entrances to the path yesterday but police have yet to confirm whether they will be upping patrols in the area as a result of the attack.

Police say they were made aware of the incident on Tuesday, December 27.

They have not yet confirmed what time the incident happened nor the sex of the people involved; nor whether there is any wider danger to the public.

Explaining the investigation is in its early stages, a Police Scotland spokesperson said: “On Tuesday, December 27, officers received a report of a serious sexual assault on a cycle path between Linwood and Bridge of Weir.

“Enquiries are ongoing to establish the exact circumstances.”
