What Tarakasi Actually Is
Tarakasi is silver wire, drawn to a fraction of a millimetre, then twisted, coiled, and soldered into patterns without a mould. The craftsman works freehand. There is no template pressed into the metal. A single panel for a pandal frame can take a workshop of four men three months to complete, and it will flex slightly in your hand because the joins are hundreds of tiny solder points, not a solid sheet. The craft holds a Geographical Indication tag, the GI was granted to Cuttack tarakasi in 2004, which means the name legally belongs to this city and the families who have worked silver wire here since the Mughal period. When you stand inside a tarakasi pandal, you are standing inside something that cannot be replicated anywhere else, not because of sentiment, but because the skill concentration that makes it possible has never moved.
