Cummins joins rare group with second T20I hat-trick

What do the world's best bowler Pat Cummins, Maltese quick Waseem Abbas and Serbian allrounder Mark Pavlovic all have in common?

They are the only men to have taken two Twenty20 International hat-tricks in the space of a week.

Cummins joined cricket's most unique group of superstars and no-names during Sunday's disappointing 21-run loss to Afghanistan, when he took his second successive hat-trick of the T20 World Cup.

Of the 3916 men to have played in a T20I since the first match in 2005, only five have taken multiple hat-tricks.

That number includes Sri Lankan slinger Lasith Malinga, New Zealand's ever-reliable Tim Southee, Abbas, Pavlovic - and now Cummins.

Of the five, only two others recorded each of their hat-tricks in the space of a week.

Pavlovic was the first to achieve the feat, Serbia's captain running through Turkey and then Croatia with his medium pacers in Bulgaria last June.

Abbas followed up with a similar effort last July, ripping through Belgium and France in the space of three days.

Cummins has surpassed them all, though, becoming the first bowler in T20I history to take hat-tricks in back-to-back games.

After being unaware he had picked up three on the trot against Bangladesh on Friday, Cummins was completely across the situation on Sunday with his 3-28.

He had Rashid Khan, Karim Janat and Gulbadin Naib all caught in the deep in St Vincent, in a near-perfect start with the ball to Australia's Super Eight stage of the World Cup.

The Test captain would have had four wickets in four balls had David Warner not grassed a chance.

"I remembered that one (today) ... crazy," Cummins said after his hat-trick helped restrict Afghanistan to 6-148.

"I've played however many games for Australia and now have two (hat-tricks) in a row."
