Cubs Legend Harry Caray’s Great-Grandson Gets MLB Broadcasting Job

Chris Caray has been hired as a television play-by-play announcer for the Oakland Athletics, becoming a fourth-generation MLB broadcaster, NBC Sports California announced Tuesday.

Caray’s father, Chip, is the television play-by-play voice for the St. Louis Cardinals. Chris’s grandfather, Skip, called games for the Atlanta Braves for 32 years. Finally, his great-grandfather Harry, was a winner of the Hall of Fame’s Ford C. Frick Award for excellence in baseball broadcasting.

Most recently, Chris Caray, along with his identical twin brother, Stefan, was a play-by-play announcer for the Amarillo Sod Poodles, the Arizona Diamondbacks’ Double-A affiliate, and the Arizona Fall League. He joins Jenny Cavnar in the booth, who was hired by the Athletics last week as the first woman to become a primary play-by-play announcer in MLB history.

Former Athletics pitcher Dallas Braden remains the team’s television analyst for color commentary.

The Athletics have overhauled their television broadcast team ahead of what could be the team’s final season in Oakland.

“Ever since I was a 12-year-old kid, I dreamed of becoming a Major League broadcaster,” Chris Caray said in a press release. “Now, I’m thrilled that that dream has come true. I’m honored and proud to join a franchise with the rich history of the Oakland A’s, and I can’t wait to grow along with this young, exciting team and my new partners with NBC Sports California, Jenny Cavnar and Dallas Braden.”
