The Grade I listed Crystal Palace dinosaurs will be restored as part of a £17.5million regeneration scheme.
The dinosaurs, that are almost 170 years old, will be rejuvenated along with the Italian Terraces, by where the palace used to stand, for them to be able to stage community events.
The dinosaurs and the surrounding island were unveiled in 1854 and were the first such sculpture to be unveiled in the world.
The series of sculptures were added to the Historic England’s Heritage at Risk Register early in 2020.
Councillor Yvonne Bear, executive councillor for Renewal, Recreation and Housing says: “It is an exciting time for this iconic park as we begin to bring forward our ground-breaking plan and create a future for the park that is fitting of its remarkable past.
“I know local residents and visitors will be eager to see progress being made on the headline restoration works including in this next stage, but there is also much more work going on around this to ensure that a long-term model is created for the park, that firmly connects its heritage to the local community and economy.”
HTA, an award-winning landscape rejuvenation design provider will lead the next stage of the works which is the latest step in the wider £52million Crystal Palace Park Regeneration Plan.
Works is also underway on the restoration of the Grade II list subway which set to be completed later this year.
