The House of Representatives is preparing to vote on a bill proposed by the Trump administration that would cut roughly $9.4 billion in federal spending that was previously approved. This plan focuses on reducing funding for foreign aid programs and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB), which supports National Public Radio (NPR) and the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS), as well as thousands of local public radio and TV stations.
According to ABC, Republicans describe these cuts as a way to remove unnecessary spending, while Democrats argue that the reductions will hurt the United States’ reputation abroad and harm people in need. While much of the spending would go elsewhere, the remaining $1.1 billion in proposed cuts would eliminate all funding for the CPB over the next two years, per NPR.
