An elderly woman hit by a fire engine in south London has suffered “life-changing” injuries, said Scotland Yard as it launches an investigation into the collision.
Police and paramedics were called to the scene on the A23 London Road, Thornton Heath, shortly before 11.40am on Tuesday.
The fire engine had been responding to an emergency call when it collided with the pedestrian at the road’s junction with Brigstock Road.
The woman - revealed on Wednesday to be in her mid-70s - was rushed to a south London hospital by air ambulance.
In a statement on Wednesday, Scotland Yard said her injuries are “believed to be life-changing”. Her family has been informed.
A Met Police spokesperson said: “Detectives from the Met’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit are carrying out enquiries to establish the circumstances.
“No arrests have been made.”
A London Fire Brigade (LFB) spokesperson said a probe has been launched into the circumstances of the crash.
It is the second incident of its kind to happen in south London just over a month.
A cyclist was hit by a fire engine responding to an emergency call in Brixton on August 23. He was taken to hospital with a head injury. His injuries were “not found to be life-threatening or changing”, said police.
