Louisiana has recorded seven deaths from Vibrio vulnificus in 2026, according to the Louisiana Department of Health's Vibrio data page, which includes data through Sept. 23. The state has confirmed 19 infections this year, and 17 of them involved a wound exposed to seawater. That is two more deaths and 10 more cases than the state reported in early August.
The latest figures also show a notable change. Two of the 19 cases are listed under "other exposure," which means not every 2026 infection began with a cut. The department has not said which exposure route applied to the two newest deaths or where in the state those patients lived.
