A clean-up is taking place in Craigneuk after discarded waste led to an increase in the sightings of rodents.
A letter from the council has been sent to residents informing them of this week's clean-up, on June 29 and 30, and of the rise in rats spotted in the community.
The letter states: “You may have noticed an increase in waste in some gardens and streets within your area recently.
“Excessive waste has a detrimental impact on the environment and has recently caused an increase in vermin being seen in the area.
“The above dates have been arranged to assist you as a community to improve your area where North Lanarkshire Council will be providing seven skips which will be located around the Craigneuk area.
“We ask that in those areas where a skip is going to be placed in a car park residents refrain from parking in that area between 8am and 4pm.
“We will also have staff onsite litter picking and removing rubbish from open spaces. Skips will be available between 9am and 4pm.
“As part of the clean up initiative, we have arranged for the Environmental Team to empty all contaminated bins within the area.
“Please place all bins kerbside for 7am on Thursday, June 30, to allow these to be emptied.
“Your waste is your responsibilty, please use this opportunity to assist us in making your area an attractive place for you and your neighbours to live.”
Skips will be available at Flaxmill Avenue, The Broadway, Glencairn Avenue, Meadowhead Road, Aldersyde Avenue and Golfhill Road.
Craigneuk councillor Kenneth Duffy said: “I welcome this initiative by the council.
“The community has been blighted recently with fly-tipping and reports of rats, this is an opportunity to get Craigneuk squared up.”
