Craig McPherson absent for Rangers after Celtic headbutt madness and Fran Alonso's side cling onto title dream - SWPL roundup

Fran Alonso reckons Celtic’s Scotland stars should be heading off on a cap call after watching them dump Partick Thistle 2-0 to stay in the title hunt.

Amy Gallacher opened the scoring before Jags defender Rosie Slater hit an unfortunate own goal, turning in Shen Menglu’s cross, to seal it. With international ties over next two weeks, the Hoops are without a single player in the Scotland squad for friendlies against Australia and Costa Rica – Parkhead captain Kelly Clark a notable omission. Alonso said: “We should have much more, especially with Scotland, we should have players away. For some reason they are not but maybe that will benefit us.”

There was no change at the top of the SWPL as rivals Rangers beat Hibs 2-0 with boss Craig McPherson absent following Monday night’s headbutt on Alonso. Kirsty Howat and Sam Kerr were on target for Rangers, who are third.

Leaders Glasgow City had to work for the points against Hearts. Emily Whelan broke the deadlock just before half-time with Amy Muir securing the points.

Motherwell settled for a share of the spoils in a 1-1 draw with Dundee United after Danni McGinley cancelled out Tiree Burchill’s goal. Spartans narrowed the gap on the Lanarkshire side but had to fight back after Eilidh Shore gave Aberdeen the lead inside the opening minute. Amelie Birse’s first Spartans goal and fellow Caley Gibb’s low drive completed the comeback. Eilidh Austin and Chloe Muir helped Hamilton move 16 points ahead of bottom-placed Glasgow.
