What time is Nicola Sturgeon's Covid update and what will she announce

Nicola Sturgeon is set to address the coronavirus situation across Scotland in her latest update at the Scottish Parliament this afternoon.

The First Minister will give an update on the country’s fight when she speaks at Holyrood later today.

The vast majority of restrictions have been lifted, with hospitality venues now fully reopened following a reimposition of certain measures over the festive period in an effort to curb the spread of the omicron variant.

Her update comes after health secretary Humza Yousaf said Scotland was now “through the worst” of the latest pandemic set back.

He told the BBC’s Good Morning Scotland programme: "I think we're through the worst of it.

"I definitely think the last few weeks of December and the first few weeks of January - that five to six-week period - was probably the worst and most intense period the health service has ever come under in its 73-year existence.

"That's not coming from me, that's coming from people... who have been working there for decades and decades."

On Monday, the Scottish Government reported 5,809 new coronavirus cases but no deaths in the previous 24 hours.

The official figures mean the number of people who have died within 28 days of a positive Covid test remains at 10,433.

However, authorities noted that register offices are generally closed at the weekend.

When is Nicola Sturgeon due to speak?

It is expected that Nicola Sturgeon will give the update to the Scottish Parliament just after 2pm.

You can watch the update on Scottish Parliament TV or through a stream on the Scottish Government social media.

Edinburgh Live will also be providing coverage of the speech.
