Covid-19: New subvariant driving US surge found in Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu

MUMBAI: The fast-spreading Omicron subvariant, BA 2.12.1, which is currently driving the surge in the US, has been detected in some samples in Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu, reports Sumitra Deb Roy. Though its spread is limited for now, states have been asked to strengthen genome sequencing to keep track of emerging variants.

The state continued to see a surge as the Covid case tally rose by over 50% in the state and the city on Tuesday. Maharashtra saw 2,956 cases on Tuesday, after Monday's low of 1,885. Mumbai also reported 1,724 cases, up from 1,118. Importantly, the state reported four deaths, the first time since April 26. Hospitalisations remained steady in Mumbai at 75.
