In the last nine days, the number of active COVID caseloads in India has doubled which led the government to issue an advisory to states. The reason: A new COVID variant named JN.1, was first detected in the southern state of Kerala. Since then, the cases due to this COVID-19 subvariant have also been found in other Indian states like Goa, Maharashtra, and Rajasthan.
Experts say that either the COVID-19 JN.1 variant is more transmissible or evades people's immune systems more efficiently.
