Covent Garden: Christmas Day tragedy as car mows down pedestrians in West End

A pedestrian is spending their Christmas Day fighting for their life in hospital after a car mowed down several people in the West End in the early hours.

Four people were injured, and a driver, a 31-year-old man, has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.

Scotland Yard said the incident is not terror-related and is being linked to a nightclub in Covent Garden.

Forensic officers have bagged up shoes and other items of clothing from the pavement on Shaftesbury Avenue.

A police cordon is in place between Gielgud Theatre and Sondheim Theatre at the centre of London’s entertainment district.

The Met Police say the suspect was involved in an altercation at a nightclub before getting in his car and “mounting the pavement”.

The force were called at 12.45am on Christmas Day following reports of a collision and a car driving on the wrong side of the road on Shaftesbury Avenue.

A pedestrian was left fighting for their life and three other pedestrians have been rushed to hospital.

The Met Police confirmed that the incident is not being treated as terrorism.

Blood and items of clothing including a jacket, shoes and a hat could be seen strewn across the pavement in front of a Caffe Concerto on Wednesday morning.

A second cordon was seen in place in Soho. The cordon, on Archer Street and Great Windmill Street, covers the Windmill Soho nightclub and other venues in the city centre.

Deputy Assistant Commissioner Stuart Cundy said “Officers responded quickly to this report, working closely with City of London Police to arrest a man within minutes.

“Detectives are quickly progressing enquiries as part of this investigation. It’s believed that the suspect was involved in an altercation at a nightclub prior to getting in his car and mounting the pavement.

“Several scenes remain in place at the location today.

“This has been confirmed as an isolated incident which is not terrorism-related.”
