Council highways worker raises more than £350k as drag queen alter ego Zandra

A council highways worker has now raised more than £350,000 for charity by dressing up in drag as his alter ego - Zandra.

Mark Preston, who lives in Eastwood, who has been doing drag for the past 22 years, says he has never taken a penny for himself despite doing countless shows - instead donating all the money to good causes.

Through his work, Mr Preston has raised money for a number of different national and local charities. The figure has now reached £358,400.37.

In the process he has won multiple awards for his work, one of which he was presented by the Mayor of Broxtowe Richard McRae.

He told Nottinghamshire Live his work colleagues are extremely supportive of his work as Zandra.

"They've been very supportive of me," he said.

"They're cracking - we're like a family.

"It's nice to know just how much money I've raised.

"I started doing this when I was at my lowest and it helped me to get through that myself. I had given up, honestly. I had a nervous breakdown.

"But my friends encouraged me to try out drag and I loved it pretty much straight away."

Mark won a show he entered and never looked back - and drag has been a huge part of his life ever since.

So what should you expect if you go and Mark - AKA Zandra - in action?

"It's a very clean show," he said.

"I like to make people who are watching feel comfortable and a part of the show as well.

"We have live singers - people definitely get their money's worth. If anything, I've had people tell me we should charge more for the shows.

"I want to raise more money - I don't want to stop anytime soon."

He often performs alongside his brother-in-law Kev Carrington - who dresses up as TV personality Harry Hill.
