For the last several years, one of the hottest head-coaching candidates in the NFL has been Josh McDaniels. He’s been an offensive coordinator with the Patriots since 2012 and has worked with both Bill Belichick and Tom Brady.
However, he’s been very picky when it comes to interviews and potentially taking a head coaching job. Is he waiting for Belichick to retire or is he waiting for the right fit?
In a recent piece by ESPN’s NFL insiders, they discussed all of the head coaching vacancies currently in the league. When it came to the Raiders, three names were mentioned as possible candidates.
The first was Rich Bisaccia, who interviewed on Wednesday. The second was Jim Harbaugh, which isn’t surprising considering the amount of smoke we’ve seen over the last week. It seems like Harbaugh is interested in coming back to the NFL, but the Raiders have not yet interviewed him for the job.
The last name was Josh McDaniels, who was brought up by Dan Graziano. Here is what he had to say about the Raiders potentially hiring McDaniels:
“The Raiders’ season just ended last Saturday, and team owner Mark Davis was waiting for the end of the season before beginning this process. So it could be just a matter of time before things are finalized and Harbaugh is the new Raiders coach.
If it doesn’t happen, yes, interim coach Rich Bisaccia deserves and will get a look, but I’ve also been told to watch out for Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels as a candidate here.”
It’s not yet known if the Raiders have requested a coaching interview with McDaniels, but this one does make a lot of sense. Mark Davis has talked about making a “splash” when it comes to hiring his next head coach and McDaniels certainly fits the criteria.
McDaniels is only 45 years old, but he’s been coaching since 2001 in the NFL. He started as an assistant in New England before eventually being hired by the Broncos as their head coach in 2009. We will continue to update this story as more information becomes available.
