A hearty Edinburgh gastropub in Bonnington has been named a national favourite, and the team have said they are “shoulder to shoulder” amongst the list with other fantastic eateries around the country.
Over the weekend, The Guardian named an Edinburgh pub amongst the 30 best pubs around the UK for Sunday lunch.
Edinburgh’s The Ox was on the list, and The Guardian praised the Bonnington pub for its classic Sunday roast.
“There are still very few places in Edinburgh specialising in Sunday lunch – and clearly there is a demand,” The Guardian wrote.
“The Ox’s usual diverse menu is available all week, but on a Sunday most diners go for the roast – beef, pork belly or veggie nut with big yorkshire puds, triple-fried chips, green beans and cauliflower cheese.”

Located on Edinburgh’s vibrant Broughton Street at the corner of London Street, the pub boasts of “hearty food, good drinks and creating a local community.”
The Ox opened in 2014, and “spotted a gap in the market” for Sunday roasts.
“It now does almost 200 covers, so that was some gap in the market,” The Guardian reported.
The Ox claims to showcase “the finest of Scottish food and drinks while creating a relaxed atmosphere.” The popular gastropub is happy to welcome locals and visitors alike alongside the occasional friendly dog.
“Very proud to be included in this list today, shoulder to shoulder with some fantastic pubs, bars, and restaurants. Thanks to everyone who visits us and rates us, it’s massively appreciated,” The Ox said of making the list.
The Ox was created by three friends with a passion for good food and drink in 2014.
“After much deliberation we decided to call it The Ox because for us it says simple, straightforward and honest - everything we feel a great pub should be,” The Ox website explains.
“We are child friendly until 10pm and we also welcome your well behaved dogs with a pat on the head, a water bowl and some dog biscuits."
Sunday lunch is served from noon until nine starting at £14.50. Booking is essential. More information about The Ox on their website.
