Cost of living Ireland: Bord Gais Energy and Electric Ireland customers hit by major payment blunders

Bord Gais Energy and Electric Ireland have both apologised for billing issues amid the energy crisis.

The companies appear to have made errors when processing customer bills. Bord Gais stated online that some customers had been charged twice due to a technical issue, while Electric Ireland reportedly did not issue bills to a small portion of customers in the correct time period.

The errors have unfolded as energy costs skyrocket across Ireland. The affected bills cover the early months of this year, when energy usage tends to be high due to colder weather.

Bord Gais Energy reassured customers impacted by the error that the issue would soon be rectified. The electricity provider said all customers should have the money back in their accounts by today.

The company's statement reads: "Unfortunately, due to an error with our banking partner's system, some of our direct debit customers have experienced a double direct debit taken from their bank accounts today. We understand the inconvenience and frustration this may have caused and we sincerely apologise for this."

Electric Ireland also apologised to their customers for issues arising from bills. The electricity supplier said that the application of incorrect discounts led to bill delays for less than 1 per cent of their customers.

The company said: "We are working hard to resolve this as quickly as possible, and corrections to those impacted customers will issue as credit on their bills in due course – current indications are that the average correction is likely to be in the order of €20. We apologise for the inconvenience that this may cause and want to reassure those customers affected that we will contact them and make any necessary amends."

Bord Gais Energy supplies over 750,000 customers with energy in Ireland. Meanwhile, Electric Ireland provides energy to over one million people nationwide.
