Coronation Street fans have called for Coronation Street to 'sweep all the awards' after powerful acid attack scenes screened on Monday night. Hearts were pounding as bride Daisy Midgeley was targeted by her stalker Justin Rutherford as she prepared to marry Daniel Osbourne after waking up with a red eye, news of her wedding car being stolen and the wrong message on her wedding cake.
When barmaid Daisy, played by Charlotte Jordan, was locking up the Rovers Return with Ryan Connor, who had stepped in as chauffeur on her special day, Justin stepped out of the shadows and hurled a glass of acid in her direction. There was harrowing drama as Ryan stepped in and took the force of the acid.
As he writhed and screamed in agony, Daisy called 999 and was instructed to get him under cold water in the shower and she cut the shirt off his back. She rounded on DS Swain over the police not acting sooner about Justin after she reported him numerous times and was turned down for a Stalking Protection Order and was horrified to find him outside the hospital as she waited for news on Ryan.

In a tense confrontation with Justin, who pursued her after she was kind to him in a hospital waiting room and her name was read out, she kept him talking until police swooped and arrested him for GBH. Later in hospital a tearful Ryan, played by Ryan Prescott, made clear that he didn't blame her but broke down crying as he asked: "What am I going to do Daisy. What am I going to do?"
Along with the rest of the nation who were watching the scenes, soap legend Julie Hesmondhalgh said she was in tears as she watched. She heaped praise on the cast and crew, and her Coronation Street writer husband Ian Kershaw.
Julie, who played Corrie icon Hayley Cropper from 1998 to 2014, tweeted: "Away from home and only able to watch clips of tonight’s #Corrie written by my incredible husband @Iankershaw. Weeping in a park in America. Outstanding work from cast and crew and director and Kersh just phenomenal."
And fans flocked to agree with her including @RAYCASTLETON who said: "I loved it. The comedic acting in the Rovers pre 'wedding that goes wrong.' The warmth of the rallying of friends to save the day, the shock of the attack and the terror and pain it caused, the surprise of the car scene and her tempting him to his capture. All spot on!! BAFTA!!"
@IreneEstry applauded: "Truly outstanding, raw emotion. Brilliantly written Ian, award winning performances, Corrie at its best!!!" And @JoshChadwickAct agreed: "You’re right Julie, it was outstanding and very emotional. Credit to the actors for taking on such a tough and heartbreaking storyline, superb acting."
@amandamoo100 told her: "Julie- it was so upsetting but I was transfixed, I could not take my eyes off it and yet it was horrific….so impressed by the acting the way it was filmed - the visuals, the sound -it was the most compelling episode of Corrie I have ever seen."
And @NicoleMary2004 said "You’re so bloody right Julie. It was so outstanding and very emotional. Credit to the actors for taking on such a tough and heartbreaking storyline. Phenomenal acting from everyone involved. I’m so so bloody proud of you all and I love you all lots."
