Coronavirus cases double in one Greater Manchester borough as infection rates rise across the region

The number of coronavirus cases in Trafford has doubled in a week as infection rates continue to rise across Greater Manchester.

All ten of the region's boroughs have seen an increases in cases, with the week on week figures up more than 65pc. Trafford continues to have the highest coronavirus infection rate, recording a rate of 578.3 cases per 100,000 people in the week ending March 12, according to the latest data from the UK Health Security Agency.

The lowest infection rate is in Rochdale, where the rate is 242.3 cases per 100,000 people. In Greater Manchester as a whole, the infection rate is now 376.4 cases per 100,000 population.

The infection rate in the region is lower than the national average, which is 616 cases per 100,000 people. A total of 10,673 people tested positive for coronavirus across Greater Manchester in the week which ended on March 12.

The Greater Manchester weekly total has increased by 4,317 cases compared to the previous week, which means the infection rate was up 68pc in the last week. The infection rate is lower than the national average in all ten boroughs.

Hospital admissions

In the week ending on March 6, a total of 335 patients were admitted to Greater Manchester NHS hospitals with Covid-19. That is 27 more than the week before, a rise of 9pc.

On Tuesday March 8, there were 11 Mechanical Ventilation (MV) beds occupied by Covid patients in Greater Manchester NHS hospitals. That is three fewer than a week earlier.

This is the most recent available data for hospital admissions. The figures for NHS trusts are not updated daily.

Deaths

In the week ending March 12, a total of 16 people died within 28 days of a positive Covid test across Greater Manchester, which is 13 fewer than the week before.

Since the start of the pandemic, there have been a total of 918,056 confirmed coronavirus cases in Greater Manchester. There has been a total of 8,812 deaths.

Cases reported in each of the ten boroughs

Salford

Salford recorded 969 coronavirus cases, which is 387 more than in the previous seven days.

The latest infection rate in Salford is 368.9 cases per 100,000 people and that is up 66pc week-on-week.

Stockport

There were 1,563 positive tests over the last week in Stockport, which is 653 more than in the previous week.

The week-on-week trend in Stockport is up by 72pc and the latest infection rate is 531.3 cases per 100,000 people.

Bolton

In Bolton, the number of cases is up by 56pc compared to the previous week - leaving the infection rate at 288.3 cases per 100,000 population.

There were 831 positive Covid-19 tests in Bolton in the week ending March 12, which was 299 more than the previous seven days.

Manchester

The trend is up in Manchester, where there were 2,047 positive Covid-19 tests in the week ending March 12, which is 798 more than the previous seven days. That is up by 64pc compared to the previous week.

The latest infection rate in Manchester is 368.3 cases per 100,000 people, which is lower than the national average.

Oldham

Oldham is an area where the trend is up. The latest infection rate here is 257.5 cases per 100,000 people.

There were 612 cases recorded in Oldham, which is 200 more than the previous week - a rise of 49pc.

Tameside

Tameside saw a total of 813 cases in the week ending March 12, which is 343 more than the previous week. That is a rise of 73pc.

In Tameside, the most recent coronavirus infection rate is now 358 cases per 100,000 people.

Trafford

In Trafford, there were 1,374 positive Covid-19 tests in the week ending March 12, which is 688 more than the previous seven days.

Trafford has the highest infection rate in the region. The infection rate in Trafford is up slightly compared with the previous day and the week-on-week trend is up by 100pc.

Bury

In Bury, the latest infection rate is 403.2 cases per 100,000 people and the number of cases has gone up by 59pc.

A total of 769 people tested positive for Covid in Bury over the seven days ending on March 12, which is 285 more than the week before.

Wigan

There was a rise of 68pc in cases in Wigan over the week ending March 12, and the infection rate is now 348.6 cases per 100,000 population.

Wigan recorded 1,153 positive Covid-19 tests over the seven-day period, and that is 468 more than the previous week.

Rochdale

Rochdale, which has the lowest infection rate in the region, recorded 542 positive Covid-19 tests in the week ending March 12, which is 196 more than the previous seven days.

The coronavirus infection rate in Rochdale is now 242.3 cases per 100,000 people and is up by 57pc week-on-week.
