Coronation Street star would play cancer storyline differently after own diagnosis

  • Coronation Street star Sally Dynevor stated she would portray her character’s breast cancer storyline “very differently” now, having personally faced the disease.
  • Dynevor, who plays Sally Metcalfe, was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2009 at 46, coincidentally on the same day she filmed a scene where her on-screen character received her own diagnosis.
  • Speaking to Prima magazine, the actress explained that her personal experience made her realise she didn't fully convey the hidden pain of the illness in her initial portrayal, leading her to believe she would approach it with more nuance today.
  • She expressed immense gratitude for returning to her role after six months off for treatment, describing her nearly four-decade tenure on the ITV soap as the “perfect job” and stating she never thought she would stay so long.
  • Dynevor, who was awarded an MBE in 2021 and is married to Emmerdale scriptwriter Tim Dynevor, also affirmed her intention never to retire, finding joy and inspiration in her work and younger colleagues.
