Contesting as an independent again is impractical: Sumalatha Ambareesh

BENGALURU: Lending credence to speculation that she might join a party ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Mandya independent MP Sumalatha Ambareesh said on Monday contesting as an independent again is “impractical”.

However, she said she has still not decided which party she would join as the elections are two years away.

On Monday, Sumalatha met chief minister Basavaraj Bommai, sparking speculation that she was planning to join BJP. However, Bommai denied these reports and said she had met him to invite him to her nephew’s wedding. “We also discussed some development work-related issues,” chief minister Bommai said.

When contacted, Sumalatha told TOI she is open to join- ing a mainstream political party but whether she would

and which party she would choose will depend on the general mood and opinion of the people of Mandya.

“Whatever decision I take, it will only be after I take my constituents into confidence. It cannot be my decision because it was theirdecision that I contest the polls in 2019 as an independent,” she said.
