Congressional candidate who says she was raped while fixing campaign signs believes attack was ‘crime of opportunity’

Bernadette Greene-Placentia, a Democratic congressional candidate in Arizona’s 8th District, reported being sexually assaulted near Sun City during the early morning hours late this summer while repairing campaign signs. She formally reported the attack to local police more than two weeks later, and the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office confirmed the investigation is active - (AP)

Arizona Congressional candidate Bernadette Greene-Placentia does not believe she was targeted by political enemies when she was sexually assaulted while repairing campaign signs this summer. She is certain, though, that her attackers realized who she was.

“My thought is that it was more a crime of opportunity,” Greene-Placentia told The Independent in an interview on Thursday. “I didn’t think that, ‘Oh my gosh, I was followed.’ But I definitely felt like I was recognized.”
