Residents who live near King George Park in Aspley shared concerns that the council appeared to be cutting down trees. The park is located on Aspley Lane.
King George's park is owned and managed by Broxtowe Borough Council and is often used for several different sports and recreational activities. It also provides a space for quiet reflection and walks. Residents became concerned after witnessing work being carried out on the trees that are growing throughout the park.
Nottingham City Council has confirmed that no trees are being removed in the area but they are cutting the top branches for health and safety reasons. It's part of a practice called pollarding. Pollarding is a practice that needs to be done every two years to maintain the health of the trees.
A City Council spokesperson said: “We have identified a number of Poplar trees at King George Park in Aspley that are having upper branches removed for health and safety reasons as once these trees reach a certain height, they start to lose branches. This tree maintenance practice, known as pollarding, allows them to safely grow large again, and these particular trees have been successfully pollarded in the past.”
