Commanders place franchise tag on DT Daron Payne

The Washington Commanders released quarterback Carson Wentz and defensive back Bobby McCain Monday, clearing plenty of cap space.

On Tuesday, Washington placed the franchise tag on defensive tackle Daron Payne. Payne’s franchise tag will cost $18.9 against the salary cap in 2023 unless he and the team can work out a long-term deal.

The two sides have until July 17 to work out a long-term deal, or he will play the 2023 season on the franchise tag.

Washington chose not to work on a long-term agreement last spring after having signed fellow defensive tackle Jonathan Allen to a four-year, $72 million deal in the summer of 2021. However, Payne had a career year, registering a career-high 11.5 sacks and 18 tackles for loss, which was fifth in the NFL.

Payne’s 11.5 sacks tied Dave Butz for the franchise single-season record for a defensive tackle.

Washington head coach Ron Rivera will speak Tuesday at the NFL Scouting Combine.
