Washington Commanders defensive tackle Daron Payne made the Pro Bowl, after all. On Thursday, it was announced that Payne, originally selected as a first-team alternate, was replacing Rams defensive tackle in the Pro Bowl.
Payne will join longtime teammate Jonathan Allen and New York Giants defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence in the Pro Bowl.
Payne had a career year in 2022, finishing with career highs in tackles [64], tackles for loss [18] and sacks [11.5]. He also had five passes defended and 20 quarterback hits.
Payne’s career season came at the perfect time. He is scheduled for unrestricted free agency in 2023. The Commanders plan to do everything in their power to retain Payne, 25, who has only missed one career game in five NFL seasons.
The deadline to apply the franchise tag to players is March 7.
