Silverchair members Daniel Johns, Ben Gillies and Chris Joannou have released a joint statement addressing public pleas for the band to get back together to make Sunday's big dance the "greatest grand final".
The statement said that for the first time in ages, the three former band members "actually agree wholeheartedly about something: GO KNIGHTS!!!".
"It's all about the Knights this weekend. We love how footy brings this community together, and it's pretty special watching the whole Steel City get behind the boys."
Earlier this week, former Knights player Andrew Johns called on the Aussie rock band, which started in Newcastle in 1992, to regroup for a grand final show.
Silverchair has officially shot the idea down, thanking everyone who had asked in their joint statement.
"We're way too rusty, so sorry, no can do," the statement said.
"We won't be taking the stage, but we'll be supporting as loudly as everyone else and there in spirit.
"Wishing the Newy players all the luck in the world this Sunday."
The Newcastle Herald understands Gillies and Joannou will be attending the grand final in Sydney.
The band started as Innocent Criminals with Daniel Johns on vocals and guitars, Ben Gillies on drums and Chris Joannou on bass guitar.
Appearing on Nine's Today earlier this week, Andrew Johns begged the band to regroup for Sunday's final against the Roosters.
"Now we just need Silverchair," Johns said.
"Boys, we need youse [sic] to play to make it the greatest grand final and Sunday you've ever seen.
"Come on boys, come on Daniel. After I kidnapped him he's got an AVO out against me ... come on Daniel, Chris and Ben, come on boys."
After the 1997 grand final, Johns broke into Daniel Johns' house and 'kidnapped' the then-teenager to party with the Knights.
Silverchair's debut album Frogstomp was released in 1995 and became a number one album in Australia and New Zealand.
In May 2011, the band said they were on an "indefinite hiatus".
