Despite coming off a record-setting 2023 season for the franchise, the Indianapolis Colts pass rush could still be looking to add a bit more juice to the group this offseason.
In looking at the potential landing spots for the top edge rushers in free agency, one name was linked to the Colts by Pro Football Focus. That player also spent the 2023 season within the division.
38. EDGE JONATHAN GREENARD, HOUSTON TEXANS
Potential landing spot(s): Chicago Bears, Indianapolis Colts
Greenard has super long arms and is a good lateral athlete who can hold up well at the point of attack while demonstrating a deeper bag of pass-rush moves in 2023. He brings a motor that Chicago is looking for, and the Bears could further solidify one of the best run defenses in the NFL while also adding pass-rush juice.
The Colts don’t typically make splashes quite this big, but the team made a shrewd signing with Samson Ebukam last offseason. Here, they steal a division rival’s young player while further bolstering a platoon defensive line that could lose a few pieces this offseason.
Greenard enjoyed a breakout season in 2023, logging career-high marks in almost every category. In 15 games (all starts), Greenard recorded 12.5 sacks, 15 tackles for loss and 22 quarterback hits—all career-highs.
According to Pro Football Focus, he logged 53 total pressures and 37 total defensive stops. He also was credited with 13 missed tackles.
The Colts’ pass rush was much improved during the 2023 season, recording a franchise record 51 sacks. However, they could stand to be more consistent as their pressure rate was more toward the middle of the league.
Greenard is expected to cost more than a typical rotational edge rusher, but a defensive end room with him alongside Samson Ebukam, Kwity Paye and Dayo Odeyingbo would be a lethal quartet.
