Colorado Teen Dies After Jumping Into Electrified Virginia Lake

Bedford County, VA Sheriff

A heartbreaking incident occurred at Smith Mountain Lake in Virginia, where 18-year-old Jesse Hamric, a recent graduate of Steamboat Springs High School in Colorado, lost his life on Independence Day. Hamric was visiting friends in Virginia with his family when the tragedy unfolded.

According to the Bedford County Sheriff's Office, Hamric jumped into the lake on Thursday morning, only to encounter a fatal danger. His friends quickly realized something was amiss when they felt electricity in the water after jumping in to assist him. It was later determined that stray voltage from a nearby dock was the cause of the electrocution.

Despite the risks, Hamric's friends managed to pull him out of the water and performed CPR until emergency responders arrived at the scene. Tragically, Hamric was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital.

The incident is being investigated as an accident, with authorities emphasizing the need for safety measures to prevent similar occurrences in the future. The homeowner of the residence responsible for the electrical issue has been informed and is required to address the problem with the help of an electrician.

Hamric's untimely passing has deeply impacted his community, prompting the creation of a GoFundMe page to support his family and establish the 'Jesse Cyrus Hamric Foundation for Courage and Love.' The fundraiser has garnered overwhelming support, raising over $72,000 to assist the grieving family.

Described as a beloved friend and a beacon of positivity, Jesse Hamric's memory will live on in the hearts of those who knew him. His tragic death serves as a reminder of the importance of electrical safety and vigilance around water bodies, urging individuals to prioritize precautionary measures to prevent similar tragedies.
