Authorities reported that more than 10 individuals were trapped inside a Colorado mine, while 11 others were successfully rescued following an equipment malfunction at the Mollie Kathleen Gold Mine in Cripple Creek. The incident occurred at a mine that is currently closed for mining operations but remains open for tours, allowing visitors to descend 1,000 feet underground.
The Teller County Sheriff's Office clarified that the situation was a result of an equipment malfunction and not a collapse of the mine structure. Responding to the emergency, the Colorado Springs Fire Department also joined the rescue efforts.
Colorado Governor Jared Polis acknowledged the incident and expressed his involvement in coordinating with local authorities. In a statement, Governor Polis assured that the state is providing assistance to Teller County and mobilizing resources to aid in the rescue operation.
He stated, 'I have spoken to the Teller County Sheriff and County Commissioners and will stay in touch through the course of this rescue effort. The state is assisting Teller County and sending resources to rescue those inside the mine. We will do everything possible and assist the county to ensure a speedy and safe resolution of the situation.'
