Met Eireann lists coldest places in Ireland as temperatures fell to -9C in two areas

It was a bitterly cold night in Ireland on Wednesday night as mercury plummeted to well below zero.

And while the whole country felt the chill, the two lowest temperatures were recorded at weather stations in Cavan and Cork.

According to the Weather Observations Website of Met Eireann, the coldest temperatures were recorded in Kilcogy in Cavan and Millstreet in Cork - with both places reaching a freezing cold -9C.

Meanwhile, many other areas hit lows of -7C and -8C including Thomastown in Kilkenny, Abbeyfeale in Limerick, Tuam in Galway, Roscommon town, as well as others.

A Status Orange weather warning for 'low temperature and ice' was in place for 19 counties overnight, covering most of the midlands and the southwest of Ireland.

Met Eireann has since extended the Status Orange 'warning for Thursday night as well to cover the entire country.

Temperatures could plummet to the same lows once again, and could hit -8C in some parts of the Midlands.

It will be freezing cold with below -5C expected widely and ‘severe’ frost and ice affecting much of the country. However, the forecaster said temperatures will reach as low as -8C in some parts of the Midlands.

The Irish forecaster warned: “Extremely cold on Thursday night with temperatures below -5 degrees expected widely, leading to severe frost and ice.”

This status orange alert will remain in place from 6pm Thursday evening until 12pm on Friday for; Leinster, Cavan, Monaghan, Munster, Connacht.

Meanwhile, a Status Yellow low temperature and ice warning remains in place for the entire country until midday on Friday.

However, Met Eireann has warned that the big freeze is not over then. While temperatures will begin to rise over the weekend, it will be a short-lived increase.

Once Christmas week arrives, temperatures will plummet once again with the national forecaster warning: “It looks to gradually get colder throughout next week.”
