Coimbatore Medical College Hospital doctors treat rare skin disease

COIMBATORE: A 35-year-old man, who was suffering from toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN), a rare skin condition, has completely recovered, thanks to doctors of the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH).

Murugavel of Udumalapet was suffering from TEN, which occurs due to an allergy to medication, CMCH dean Dr A Nirmala said. “Initially, the person would have blisters all over the body, followed by peeling skin. There is a chance of 50 to 80% mortality if the patient is not hospitalised.”

Murugavel was admitted to the hospital in the first week of May. While the treatment would cost nearly 10 lakh in private hospitals, it was offered free under the chief minister’s comprehensive health insurance scheme.TNN
