Coimbatore: Man stabs wife to death, held

COIMBATORE: The Podanur police arrested a 31-year-old man for stabbing his 27-year-old wife to death in their house on Kamarajar Nagar at Sundarapuram here on Sunday.

Police identified the victim as Sharmila of Gandhi Nagar at Sundarapuram. She had married R Nagarjun of Gandhi Nagar, an autorickshaw driver, in 2021 after dating for four years.

Nagarjun, a native of Pollachi, had shifted to Kamarajar Nagar a few years ago. “He is an alcoholic and suspected his wife’s character. He used to reprimand her for speaking to others over phone and would often beat her up. He reached home on Sunday afternoon drunk and fought with Sharmila for allegedly speaking with one of his friends over phone. During the fight, he stabbed her nine times. After she died, he left the house. Around 9pm, while having drinks with his friends at Sundarapuram, he confessed to have killed his wife,” a police officer said.

The friends sent a person to Nagarjun’s house to check up on Sharmila. The man alerted police.

Assistant commissioner of police E Satheesh Kumar and Podanur police investigation wing inspector Kathirvel and team inspected the crime scene.

Police found a nylon rope tied to a ceiling fan. “Nagarjun said he thought of ending his life after killing Sharmila, but decided against it later. We have seized the knife used for the killing,” the officer added.

Police registered a case under Section 302 (punishment for murder) of the Indian Penal Code and arrested Nagarjun.
