Coimbatore: 2 policemen arrested for extortion

COIMBATORE: The Sulur police arrested two cops on Thursday afternoon for extorting ₹10,000 from a youth, who was speaking with a female friend in a car near Hotel Le Meridien on Avinashi Road here on Monday night.

The arrested were identified as Rajarajan, 38, a head constable with the Karumathampatti police and Jagadeesh, a constable with the rural armed reserve police. According to a police source, the cops were not on duty when they spotted the youth and the girl in the car near the hotel on Avinashi Road. "They were in plain clothes. The two introduced themselves as cops and verbally abused them for chatting in the car in an isolated place at night. They demanded ₹10,000 from the youth, who gave away the cash, and threatened him not to reveal the incident to anyone."
