Cody Gakpo breaks silence on transfer rumours as Liverpool and Manchester United linked

PSV forward Cody Gakpo has admitted he is flattered by transfers rumours linking him with a move to the Premier League but wants to 'focus' on his football

The 23-year-old caught the eye last campaign with 36 goal contributions for his club across all competitions, form he has carried into this season by scoring 13 times and registering 17 assists in 24 outings.

Such performances resulted in significance interest in Gakpo during the summer transfer window from both Leeds United and Manchester United. Liverpool are another team to have been included in this conversation, with Pep Lijnders described as being an admirer of the attacker.

Gakpo has continued to enhance his reputation during the current World Cup, scoring in both of the Netherlands' opening two group games, and has now responded to all the speculation surrounding his name.

"Yeah, what you said is right," he said at a press conference when asked if he takes pride in being tipped to join major European clubs. "I focus on the World Cup but it's always nice to hear such rumours. But, you know, I just try to focus here and do my best."

On whether his recent high-level displays have even shocked himself, he added: "I'm not surprised. I know what I'm capable of, but it's always a challenge to reach your highest level possible. I think I can improve in a lot of things."

Pressed on which clubs he would like to join during a separate interview earlier this month, Gakpo said: "Real Madrid, FC Barcelona, Manchester United, Manchester City and Liverpool. It would be an honour to play there, but I also have to see what kind of team I can best achieve my goals.”
