Coastal park cycle lane plans rejected over safety fears to be decided next week

Plans for a cycle lane at Crosby Coastal park are coming back to the planning committee next week after being refused on safety grounds.

Officers say they believe the plans, which include sections of shared and segregated pathways running close to the Crosby Lakeside Adventure Centre, have addressed previous safety concerns.

A petition objecting to the plans, set up by the Seafront Residents Action Group, has attracted over 200 signatures and expresses concerns over the design and layout of the pathway and its impact on nearby residents and other users of the coastal park, including dog walkers.

35 individual objections were also received to the proposals, including concerns around policy, safety, character, living conditions and environmental impacts.

Planning officers say changes have been made to the design from the one previously rejected by the planning committee, including a redesign of the pathway at the Westward View section of the path to create a greater barrier between vehicles and users of the shared pathway.

The pathway at the South Road junction has also been changed to reduce the number of conflict points and address safety concerns.

A change has also been made to the design of the crossing point off Cambridge Road to keep the grassed area intact for other users at the site.

The inclusion of Victorian-style lighting and points along the pathway address some of the concerns around heritage assets, according to the report.

Members of Sefton council’s planning committee will meet at Bootle Town Hall next Wednesday, January 18 at 6.30pm to decide whether to approve or reject the plans.
